Conservatories and orangeries offer a beautiful location to garden indoors away from the stubborn Cheshire chills. Whether yours is room temperature or unheated, there are many plants that you can grow in your orangery or conservatory throughout the year. Room Temperature Orangeries While you can certainly grow some plants in a room temperature conservatory, this environment is not ideally suited for all. Often, the air inside will be too dry for a wide variety of plants to flourish, but you can count on palms, aloes or olives to bloom in a room temperature setting. Unheated Conservatories Those with an unheated conservatory generally have a bit more variety in what they can grow, as it really depends on the temperature inside. Subtropical plants should have a minimum of 4-8 degrees Celsius. However, an unheated orangery in winter can still produce beautiful exotic plants, such as brugmansias, clivias, pomegranates and avocados. You can even tend to a miniature vegetable garden by growing vegetables in pots. During the summer, you’ll need to be careful to regulate the inside temperature with blinds. Conservatory blinds can be purchased to block out light from above so as not to bake the inside of the room and the plants inside. This will also keep you from having to continually water your plants. Fruits & Vegetables You don’t have to limit your gardening to just the spring and summer seasons.
